FAQ
What is a Desktop Wallet?
A desktop crypto wallet lets you store and manage cryptoassets such as Bitcoin from a personal computer running Windows, macOS or Linux. Some desktop wallets are programs you install. Others, such as the CEX.IO Wallet, run in a web browser, so you sign in to an account instead of installing a program.
Types of Desktop Wallets
The most common split is by who holds the private keys:
- Custodial wallet: a third-party provider, in this case CEX.IO, holds the private keys for you.
- Non-custodial wallet: you hold the private keys and keep the recovery phrase yourself.
A second split is by connection:
- Hot wallets: storage connected to the internet.
- Cold wallets: physical devices that keep the private keys offline.
There is also a split by form, and each form is either hot or cold:
- Software wallets: apps on a computer or a phone. This includes a web-based Ethereum crypto wallet for desktops [LINK: Ethereum wallet] and an Android or iOS crypto wallet for phones [LINK: iOS wallet].
- Hardware wallets: cold wallets that store private keys on a device about the size of a USB drive.
- Paper wallets: private keys printed on paper, often as a QR code that a phone can scan.
Each form has its own trade-offs. A hardware or paper wallet can be lost or damaged, and losing the keys can mean losing access to the funds. A custodial web wallet depends on the provider for access. The next section shows how to set up the CEX.IO web wallet on a desktop.

7. Add funds to your account, or buy crypto with a payment method available in your account.
Security Tips for Desktop Wallets
These steps reduce the risk of unauthorised access to a browser-based wallet on a desktop:
- Keep antivirus software up to date. It helps detect malware that could target your browser or your login details.
- Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) wherever the service offers it.
- Avoid public Wi-Fi for wallet access. Use a private connection you control when you sign in or make a transfer.
- Check the address bar before you sign in, so you know you are on the real CEX.IO site.
Pros and Cons of Desktop Wallets
A browser-based desktop wallet suits some people more than others. Here are the main points on each side.
Pros
- No seed phrase to back up: CEX.IO holds the private keys in a custodial account, so you sign in with your credentials and two-factor authentication.
- A larger screen: a desktop shows addresses, networks and amounts at full size, which helps when you check a transaction before you confirm it.
- One account on every device: the desktop wallet opens the same account as the CEX.IO app on iOS and Android.
- No program to install: the wallet runs in a browser on Windows, macOS or Linux.
Cons
- Dependence on the provider: a custodial wallet means CEX.IO controls the private keys, and you rely on CEX.IO for access to your assets. Cryptoassets are not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.
- Exposure to the computer's risks: if your computer is compromised or your login details are stolen, someone else could reach your account. A strong password and two-factor authentication reduce that risk.
- Malware and phishing: an infected computer or a fake login page could expose your account. Up-to-date antivirus software and careful browsing habits help.
Do I have to pay for the CEX.IO web wallet for the desktop?
Fees apply to actions such as buying, selling, converting and withdrawing crypto. Before you confirm any of these, the screen shows the fee, and the Limits and Commissions page lists every charge.
Can I buy Bitcoin in the UK with the desktop wallet?
Yes. The desktop wallet supports BTC purchases for UK customers who have passed identity verification and the appropriateness assessment. CEX.IO Markets UK Limited is registered with the FCA under the Money Laundering Regulations 2017 for anti-money laundering supervision only. A 24-hour cooling-off period applies before your first cryptoasset purchase, and the payment options on screen reflect your region and verification level.
How to buy Crypto in the UK at CEX.IO?
Eligible UK customers can buy crypto at CEX.IO through Instant Buy:
1. Sign in to your CEX.IO Wallet on the desktop.
2. Open Instant Buy.
3. Choose the cryptocurrency you want to buy.
4. Select the fiat currency you want to pay with.

6. Choose a payment method available in your account.
7. Check the amount, the rate and the fee on the summary.
8. Confirm, and the asset shows in your wallet once the purchase completes.
How to sell crypto in the UK on the desktop wallet?
On the desktop, open Sell in the wallet. Pick the asset, enter the amount, and choose where the proceeds go from your payout options. The summary shows the total after the fee, and the sale goes through when you confirm. For current prices, open the CEX.IO prices page.
How to send and receive crypto in the UK from a desktop?
Receiving starts from the asset's Receive option. Pick the network, then copy the deposit address, or use the QR code, in the wallet that will send. The same address works for more than one sender, and a deposit shows up after the network confirms it.
Sending starts from Send. Paste the address you are sending to, select the network that address uses, and enter the amount. A blockchain transfer cannot be reversed once it goes out, so compare the address and network on screen with the destination before you confirm.
How to use the Exchange option in UK on the desktop wallet?
The Exchange option on desktop is CEX.IO Convert, where available. You set the asset to convert from, the asset to convert to, and the amount. A confirmation step shows the rate and the amount that would arrive in your wallet, and no conversion happens until you accept it.
